A new method for the placement of brachytherapy probes in paranasal sinus and nasopharynx neoplasms
1999
Abstract Purpose: In afterloading therapy, the exact placement of the applicator is crucial for the result of radiotherapy. A deviation of few millimeters from the target leads to a significant reduction of radiation energy to the tumor. Methods and Materials: We present a new method using a computer-assisted device for three-dimensional placing of afterloading probes based on CT scans that allows for the exact placement. Results: Target points have been reached with an accuracy of 0.6 mm. Since 1991 we have used this technique for 24 clinical applications in 11 patients with recurrent neoplasms in the region of the paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx for palliative treatment. Conclusions: Th…
Incidence, age at onset, and potential reasons of malignant transformation in recurrent respiratory papillomatosis patients: 20 years experience
2005
Forty-two patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) were accepted into a multicenter prospective study in 1983 to 1990, treated with alfa-IFN 3 MU/m 2 3 times a week and then followed-up until August 1, 2003. All the patients who had disease progression with pulmonary spread were characterized by insufficient response to IFN-therapy and detection of HPV type 11. Five patients (4/5 smokers) presented malignant transformation in lungs or nasopharynx (mean RRP duration was 27.2 +/- 8 years from RRP onset and 14.6 +/- 6.3 years from pulmonary spread until malignant transformation) with persistent RRP in larynx. The results of long-term follow-up in RRP patients with HPV 11 underl…
S-100 protein positive cells in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC): absence of prognostic significance. A clinicopathological and immunohistochemical stu…
1987
An immunohistochemical study of S-100 protein in 43 nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) of known clinical evolution (33 primary and 10 metastatic) is presented. Sixty per cent of primary site cases as well as all metastatic forms showed S-100 protein positive cells intermingled with tumour cells. These S-100 positive elements were identified as Langerhans cells. No significant differences were found when correlating S-100 protein positivity and histological NPC variants, neither in age nor in sex of patients. Statistical analysis failed to demonstrate any positive correlation between S-100 protein reactivity and clinical survival.
Synthesis and In Vitro Evaluation of Defined HPMA Folate Conjugates: Influence of Aggregation on Folate Receptor (FR) Mediated Cellular Uptake
2010
In this article we report the synthesis and in vitro evaluation of well-defined, folate functionalized and fluorescently labeled polymers based on the clinically approved N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-methacrylamide (HPMA). The polymers were prepared applying the RAFT polymerization method as well as the reactive ester approach. The molecular weights of the polymers synthesized were around 15 and 30 kDa. The total content of conjugated folate varied from 0, 5, and 10 mol %. The cellular uptake of these polymers was investigated in the folate receptor (FR)-positive human nasopharyngeal epidermal carcinoma (KB-3-1) and FR-negative human lung epithelial carcinoma (A549) cancer cell lines. In FR-positive…
Interleukin-10 and interleukin-18 promoter polymorphisms in an Italian cohort of patients with undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type.
2004
Purpose: Cytokines such as IL-10 and IL-18 seem to be involved in the inflammatory response of undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type (UCNT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of IL-10 and IL-18 genes and the virological and clinical characteristics in a large case series of Caucasian patients suffering from UCNT, a tumor regularly associated with the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). Methods: Eighty-nine patients with histologically confirmed UCNT and 130 healthy donors were included in our study. DNA was examined for the polymorphisms of IL-10 gene at positions –1082, −819, −592 by dire…
Solitary splenic metastasis from nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a case report and systematic review of the literature
2016
Background: Solitary splenic metastases are a rare occurrence, and the nasopharyngeal carcinoma represents one of the most uncommon primary sources. The present study aimed to describe a rare case of a solitary single splenic metastasis from nasopharyngeal carcinoma and to assess the number of cases of isolated nasopharyngeal carcinoma metastases to the spleen reported in the literature. Main body: We describe the case of a 56-year-old man with a history of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and complete remission after chemo-radiotherapy. Three months after complete remission, positron emission tomography/ computed tomography scan revealed a hypermetabolic splenic lesion without increased metabolic …
Expression of p53 Protein and Tumor Angiogenesis as Prognostic Factors in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients.
2002
The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible prognostic significance of p53 protein overexpression and tumor angiogenesis (TA) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, together with other clinicopathological variables. Forty-two NPC patients were evaluated in relation to survival. Nuclear p53 overexpression in neoplastic and endothelial cells was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with the monoclonal antibody DO-7 and the polyclonal antibody against factor VIII-related antigen, respectively. Thereafter, we evaluated p53 cases in order to determine their nuclear immunoreactivity from negative (-) to positive (+, ++, +++). In addition, microvessels were counted in the most …
Incidence of childhood cancer of the head and neck in Germany.
2007
Background: Only very limited data are available in the literature on the incidence of childhood cancer of the head and neck worldwide. Methods: Based on data obtained from the national German Childhood Cancer Registry, a total of 370 malignancies of the head and neck in children under the age of 15 (199 boys and 171 girls), which were reported to this institution between 1994 and 2003, were analysed in this study. Results: The overall incidence of malignancies of specific sites of the head and neck in Germany is 4.48 per 100000 children. The most frequently observed entities, representing primary tumours, are soft tissue sarcomas (0.39/100000), lymphomas (0.09/100000) and thyroid carcinoma…
Frequent chromosomal gains in recurrent juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.
2007
Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare benign tumor, mostly affecting adolescent males. Some patients develop recurrences after surgery independently of completeness of removal. Only very limited data concerning underlying chromosomal changes are available. We therefore analyzed samples of 22 JNAs, including six recurrences, with comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Additionally, quantitative image cytometry was used for measurement of DNA aneuploidy in representative samples. Of the 13 primary JNAs without later recurrence, DNA gains were identified on autosomes in only two samples. Four patients with one or two recurrences were included in the study; for one of these, no…
The EBV-DNA Can be Used as a Diagnostic and Follow-up Parameter of the Rhinopharyngeal Tumors in the Non-Endemic Population of the Western Sicily
2018
To evaluate whether EBV-DNA can be used as a diagnostic and follow-up parameter for nasopharyngeal tumors in a non-endemic population. The study was carried out in a university hospital. A retrospective study was conducted on 40 paraffin samples of histological preparations. EB-DNA was detected by real-time PCR technique. A prospective study was also conducted on a group of 30 patients who underwent nasopharyngeal biopsy for suspected nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by comparing EBV-DNA concentrations between the histological specimen and the serum. Quantification of genomic copies of EBV-DNA in serum and detection of anti-EBV antibodies was performed. In both groups the presence of high vir…
